I would like to say a huge thankyou to everyone who has contributed towards raising the £3700 for my world challenge trip to Ecuador. Thankyou to all the staff at the Waggon for helping to sell tickets to the race nights, quiz nights, raffles etc. Thankyou to everyone who has attended the events and also to the businesses/individuals that have made donations towards the prizes for all events. I couldn’t have managed to raise the final amount without your help. Although I did fall £98.95 short of the target I am immensely proud of the amount I did raise with your help. Fundraising for this trip was part of the whole learning experience and has given me more confidence in myself and my abilities for the future.
In July 2019 I spent 3 weeks in Ecuador and it was the most amazing experience I could’ve asked for. The first week was spent in the capital of Ecuador, Quito, and this week was used as a climatisation week so that our group could climatise to the high altitude and polluted air. During this week, we didn’t do anything challenging we just explored the local city. The second week was the most important, this was the community project. We arrived in a small community called San Clemente. Throughout the week we were camping and during the day working with the locals to build them some steps using limited materials, such as trees they would chop down and then we secured the logs in place with soil. The steps were to replace a muddy track that was unstable which women had to travel up and down every day when travelling to and from the herb gardens. We also built part of a concrete floor outside to make the ground level and less dangerous. Once they were both completed it was amazing to see how grateful the community was for our help, and we felt like our help was much appreciated. The final week was spent at Quilatoa Lagoon and it involved trekking 14km-15km a day, seeing all the different local communities and the scenic landscapes. As we walked through the communities, we all definitely realised how unfortunate some people are and how lucky we are. The expedition as a whole was definitely an eye opening experience and I’ve come back with a more open mind and the realisation that a lot of people aren’t as fortunate as we are…a very important and humbling lesson to learn
